Forever Out of Order

for tenor voice and bass guitar (2017)

duration: 3'

program note

Forever Out of Order attempts to marry the disparate – voice and bass guitar, contemporary classical vocal music and jazz, the rather high to the very low. Through the piece, I attempt to explore the many different syllabic stresses that the word ‘silence’ can have. The irony of ‘silence’ being the most sung word in the song appealed to me as it was in itself ‘out of order’.

Cold blue silence

Luminous atmosphere

Outside forever strangely

Burning across imaginary borders

Seasons out of order as ash floats toward the sun
