Spindles

for oboe and two cellos (2015)

duration: 1'

program note

In textiles, spindles are sharp spikes used to twist fibres into yarn. I used this process and the title Spindles as inspiration for this piece; as the composition progresses, the energy builds as several motifs are bound together to create the overall result.

I approached Spindles from a rhythmic perspective - as I do with most of my compositions. I sought to create an uneven pulse throughout the piece by frequently changing time signature to give a sense of unease. I reinforced this by using dissonant harmonies at unexpected moments.

Despite the uneven rhythm of the piece, Spindles should be played with limited freedom in the time.
